Dive Deeper: Psalm 56:3

“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.” — Psalm 56:3 (NIV)

Psalm 56:3 reminds kids that when fear shows up—big or small—they don’t have to face it alone. David wrote this verse during a scary time in his life, yet he chose to trust God instead of letting fear take over. Children face many moments that can make them nervous or unsure: new situations, storms, tests at school, or hard conversations. This verse teaches them a simple truth they can hold onto: whenever they feel afraid, they can turn to God and trust Him to help.

Activity Idea: Fear to Faith Card

Help kids practice turning their fears into trust by giving each fear to God.

What You Need:

  • Small slips of paper or index cards

  • A pencil or crayons

  • A bowl, basket, or small box

What to Do:

  1. Give your child several small slips of paper.

  2. On each slip, have them write or draw something that makes them feel afraid—things like storms, tests, new situations, the dark, or being alone.

  3. Read Psalm 56:3 together: “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.”

  4. After reading the verse, have your child place each fear card into the basket or box.

  5. As they do, say together: “God, I trust You.”

Connection:

Explain that this activity shows what the verse teaches: when fear comes, we can give it to God and trust Him to help us.

Additional Discussion Topics and Questions

It can be helpful to break this verse down into three big truths:

  1. Everyone Feels Afraid Sometimes: Even strong, brave people—like David—face moments of fear. Being afraid doesn’t mean something is wrong; it means we need God’s help.

  2. We Can Choose to Trust God: Fear doesn’t get the final say. When we feel afraid, we can stop and choose to put our trust in God, knowing He is always with us.

  3. God Helps Us When We Trust Him: God gives peace, courage, and comfort. When we turn to Him, He strengthens our hearts and helps us face whatever makes us afraid.

Additional discussion questions:

  • What are some things that make you feel afraid? (Storms, darkness, tests, new situations, being alone.)

  • Is it okay to feel afraid sometimes? (Yes—everyone feels afraid, even people in the Bible.)

  • What does it mean to trust God? (Believing He is with you, helping you, and taking care of you.)

  • Who wrote this verse? (David.)

  • What scary things did he face? (Goliath, being chased by enemies, hiding for safety.)

  • Can you share a time when you were afraid and prayed? (Help them identify personal experiences.)

  • How does God help us when we’re scared? (He gives peace, courage, comfort, and strength.)

  • How can you trust God the next time you feel scared? (Pray, remember this verse, talk to a grown-up who loves God.)

  • What can you say when you feel afraid? (“When I am afraid, I put my trust in You.”)

🌟 Closing Thought

Psalm 56:3 reminds us that fear doesn’t have to control our hearts—God is always with us. When your child feels scared, encourage them to pause, pray, and remember that they can trust God to help them be brave.
