Dive Deeper: John 3:16

“The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing.” — Psalm 23:1 (NIV)

Psalm 23:1 teaches kids that God cares for them the way a shepherd cares for his sheep. A shepherd guides, protects, and provides everything the sheep need—and that’s exactly what God does for us. Children can take comfort knowing that God watches over them, gives them what they need, and leads them in the right direction. They are never alone, because God is their Shepherd.

Activity Idea: Psalm 23 Needs Inventory

Many times kids think they need a lot—but Psalm 23:1 says God provides everything we truly need.

What to Do:

  1. Have your child list things they need. Give hints as needed. (safety, food, love, wisdom, comfort, friends).

  2. Then make a second list of ways God provides these needs in their life right now.

  3. Compare the two lists and highlight the ways God has already met their needs.

Connection:

This helps kids understand what “I lack nothing” really means in daily life.

Additional Discussion Topics and Questions

It can be helpful to break this verse down into three big truths:

  1. God Is Our Shepherd: Just like a shepherd cares for his sheep, God watches over us, guides us, and protects us. He knows what we need and leads us with love.

  2. God Provides Everything We Need: When David says, “I lack nothing,” he means God gives him what is truly needed—strength, care, guidance, protection, and daily provision.

  3. We Can Trust God to Lead Us: Because God is our Shepherd, we don’t have to be afraid or try to figure things out on our own. We can follow Him and trust that He will take care of us.

Additional discussion questions:

  • How does a shepherd take care of his sheep? (He protects them, guides them, feeds them, and keeps them safe.)

  • How does God take care of us like a shepherd cares for sheep? (He gives us what we need, leads us, protects us, and stays with us.)

  • What does it mean that “The LORD is my shepherd”? (God cares for you personally, just like a shepherd knows each sheep.)

  • What do you think it means that “I lack nothing”? (God provides everything we truly need—help, comfort, strength, guidance.)

  • What are some things God gives you every day? (Food, safety, love, family, peace, wisdom.)

  • Why do sheep need a shepherd? (They can’t protect or guide themselves—they need someone to lead them.)

  • How can you trust God to take care of you each day? (Pray, follow His ways, remember His promises, talk to Him when unsure.)

  • Can you think of a time when God took care of you or helped you? (Invite your child to share personal experiences.)

  • Where in your life do you need God’s guidance right now? (School, friendships, choices, fears.)

  • How can this verse help you when you feel unsure or worried? (Remind yourself: “God is my Shepherd—He will take care of me.”)

🌟 Closing Thought

Psalm 23:1 reminds us that God is our Shepherd who lovingly cares for us. We never have to worry about having what we need, because God provides, guides, and protects us each day. This week, encourage your child to remember: “God is my Shepherd—I can trust Him.”

Matthew 5:16 - Let Your Light Shine

Matthew 5:16 reminds us that when we live in a way that honors God—showing kindness, helping others, and doing what is right—our lives become a light for the world. Kids can shine their light every day through simple acts of love and goodness. And when others see that light, it points their hearts to God and brings Him glory.
