Dive Deeper: James 1:5
“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” — James 1:5
James 1:5 reminds kids that whenever they don’t know what to do, they can ask God for wisdom. God loves to help us, and He gives wisdom generously when we ask. Whether it’s making a choice, handling a problem, or knowing the right way to act, God is always ready to guide us.
Activity Idea: Wise Choice Cards
This activity helps kids practice asking God for wisdom before deciding what to do.
What to Do:
Cut small cards or slips of paper.
On each card, write simple situations where wisdom is needed, such as:
A friend is being unkind.
You feel frustrated with a sibling.
You’re tempted to join in something wrong.
You don’t know how to solve a problem at school.
You have to decide whether to help or walk away.
You need to choose kind words instead of hurtful ones.
Place the cards in a bowl and let your child pick one.
Pause and pray first: “God, please give me wisdom.”
Then talk together about what the wise choice would be in that situation.
Additional Discussion Topics and Questions
It can be helpful to break this verse down into three big truths:
We All Need Wisdom: Everyone—kids and adults—faces times when they don’t know what to do. God understands this and invites us to come to Him.
God Gives Wisdom Generously: God doesn’t hold back or criticize us for asking. He loves helping His children and gives wisdom freely to anyone who comes to Him.
When We Ask, God Will Guide Us: God promises that when we ask for wisdom, He will give it. We can trust Him to show us the right way to go.
