Dive Deeper: Philippians 4:13

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

Philippians 4:13 (NKJV)

Philippians 4:13 reminds kids that they’re never alone when they face something hard, new, or uncertain. Paul wrote this verse from prison, and yet he had learned that no matter what his circumstances were—whether he had plenty or very little—Jesus gave him the strength to keep going. This truth is just as powerful for children today.

When kids feel nervous, discouraged, or unsure, they can remember that Christ is with them and will give them the strength they need. Whether it’s trying a new activity, being brave at school, or choosing what’s right when it’s hard, they can rely on Jesus’ power, not their own.

Below you’ll find simple ways to help your child understand what this verse means and how they can trust Christ for strength in everyday situations.

Activity Idea: "Strong in Jesus” Tower

Use this simple building activity to show kids why it’s important to rely on Christ’s strength instead of their own.

What You Need:

  • Blocks, plastic cups, or Legos

  • A soft surface (like a pillow)

  • A hard surface (like a book or table)

What to Do:

  1. Build on a soft base. Have your child build a tower on a pillow. Watch how it wobbles and falls easily.

  2. Build on a firm base. Now build the same tower on a strong foundation—like a book or the floor. Notice how steady and strong it becomes.

Talk About It:

Explain that trying to handle hard things on our own is like building on the wobbly pillow—we’re not as strong as we think. But when we trust Jesus and remember that He gives us strength, we’re building on a solid foundation.

Additional Discussion Topics and Questions

Use these topics and questions to help kids understand what it really means to find strength in Christ and how this verse applies to everyday life.

It can be helpful to break this verse down into four big truths:

1. Jesus Gives Us Strength

We don’t face hard things alone. Jesus gives us the strength we need—whether we’re scared, unsure, or doing something new.

2. Strength Isn’t About Being the Best

Paul didn’t mean he could do anything he wanted. He meant he could do what God asked him to do because Christ gave him strength—even in tough situations.

3. We Can Trust Jesus in Every Situation

Whether we have plenty or little, feel brave or nervous, Jesus is always with us. We can rely on His strength every day.

Additional discussion questions:

  1. Where does our strength come from, according to this verse?

Help kids understand: our strength comes from Christ.

  2. What are some things that feel hard for you?

    School, friendships, new activities, fears.

  3. How can Jesus help you in those moments?

  5. What was happening in Paul’s life when he wrote this verse?

  6. How does God show love for you today?

Your 1 John 4:19 question fits beautifully here—God’s love is the reason He gives us strength.

  7. How does God’s love help us trust Him for strength?

A natural connection: we trust God because He loves us.

  8. Who can you encourage with this verse this week?

Invite kids to think of someone who needs strength or courage.

  9. Who wrote the book of Philippians?

    Paul wrote Philippians.

  10. What else was Paul known for?
