Dive Deeper: Luke 6:31

“Do to others as you would have them do to you.” — Luke 6:31 (NIV)

Luke 6:31 teaches a simple and powerful truth: we should treat others the way we want to be treated. Jesus calls us to think about how we hope others will act toward us—and then choose to act that way first. Whether at home, school, or with friends, this verse helps kids learn kindness, empathy, and respect in everyday situations.

Activity Idea: Talk It Through – Golden Rule Scenarios

Use everyday situations to help kids think about how to treat others the way they want to be treated.

How to Do It:

  1. Choose a Scenario to Discuss: Talk through real-life situations your child might face. Examples:

    • A sibling accidentally breaks something of yours.

    • A friend is left out of a game.

    • Someone bumps into you and walks away.

    • A classmate drops their lunch tray.

    • A friend says something unkind.

    • A sibling wants a turn with a toy you’re using.

    • Someone new joins your class or group.

  2. Ask the First Question: “If this happened to YOU, how would you want to be treated?” Encourage answers like: kindly, patiently, fairly, gently, with understanding.

  3. Ask the Second Question: “So how can YOU treat the other person the same way?” Help them think of practical, loving responses—sharing, helping, forgiving, including someone, speaking kindly.

  4. Connect It Back to the Verse: Say together, “Do to others as you would have them do to you.” — Luke 6:31

Connection:

Talking through real situations helps kids practice empathy. They learn to pause, consider someone else’s feelings, and respond with kindness—just as Jesus teaches in the Golden Rule.

Additional Discussion Topics and Questions

It can be helpful to break this verse down into three big truths:

  1. Think About Others’ Feelings: Jesus wants us to consider how our choices affect others. When we pause to think about how we want to be treated, it helps us respond with kindness and empathy.

  2. Treat Others the Way You Want to Be Treated: The Golden Rule is simple: if we want kindness, fairness, and patience from others, we should offer those same things first.

  3. Our Actions Can Show Jesus’ Love: When we follow the Golden Rule, people see God’s love through our words and actions. Living this way helps point others to Jesus.

🌟 Closing Thought

The Golden Rule reminds us to pause and think about how we want to be treated—and then choose to treat others the same way. When your child follows this simple teaching of Jesus, they share God’s love and make a real difference in the world. This week, encourage them to look for moments to show kindness, patience, and love to everyone around them.
